Hello. My mom is in hospital. She is diagnosed with inoperable cancer and has tumors in her mouth and throat. She is in hospital because she was so under weight due to not being able to eat and dehydrated as she couldn't really drink due to pain.  She has been fed via nasal gastric tube. She is due to have a feeding tube fitted in her stomach next week. My mom says she can go home next Wednesday. She'll find out if there are other treatment options shortly.

What care can she receive at home and how is it arranged? I am unable to provide care as I have 2 disabled children to care for. I am concerned they will discharge her too soon to free the bed up, without a support package in place. Does macmillan or social care provide care and medical support at home? She is in her 70s and very frail, only 5 stone. Thank you.

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that your mum has been diagnosed with tumours in her mouth and throat and it's natural to want to know what sort of help there will be for her when she leaves hospital.

You might find this information from Macmillan on going home from hospital helpful along with this on support at home after leaving hospital.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups I'm going to recommend that you join the head and neck cancer group, where you can ask questions and share experiences about your mum's cancer and treatment, and also the family and friends group where you can share your feelings and get support.

To join these groups just click on the links I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute it would be great if you could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.
