18 months ago my precious husband had a massive stroke, this was a total shock as he has no underlying health issue and was previously a very fit man.

His stroke resulted in right side paralysis of his arm and severe weakness of his leg, he can walk around the house with the aid of a walking stick, but outside uses a wheelchair or a mobility scooter.

We have just finished having our home adapted,  during this time I notice bleeding when I went to the toilet but put it down to piles or all the heavy lifting I was doing.

Then I started getting this sensation while in bed of trying to open my bowels, after which my bowel habit changed dramatically, I phoned our GP

Fast forward four weeks I have Cancer, I go in for surgery 14th of May, to part of my bowel removed and more than likely a stoma for a year.

I am so very frightened and am struggling with the fact I will be incapacitated for months, the thought of trying to manage a stoma with everything else is totally overwhelming,

I go from total disbelief to anger that after a nightmare 18 months, when we are just adjusting to our new “normal” only for our world to be turned upside again by Cancer

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

It sounds like you and your husband have had a very tough couple of years and it's no wonder that you're feeling as you do now that you've recently been diagnosed with cancer.

I'm assuming that as you have joined the bowel cancer group that this is the type of cancer that you have and I'm sure that if you post there you'll find it's a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support. When you feel ready to post there clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there where you can start a new post in the same way as you did here. To save you typing this all out again just copy and paste it into your new post.

When you have a minute it would be great if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.
