Newly diagnosed

I have today today been diagnosed with breast cancer that is also in my lung. I have to have further tests and the fluid on my lung aspirated. I'm terrified, have no idea whether it is treatable, has spread further, or any idea of prognosis.  I have at the moment only been seen by a respiratory cons, so have no idea of what will happen next.

There seems to be no support , help or advice anywhere.

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

Although I was diagnosed with a different type of cancer to you I do know what a worrying time you'll be going through at the moment. Once you know what your treatment plan is you'll hopefully feel more in control.

I'm not sure from your post whether you've been diagnosed with both breast cancer and lung cancer or whether you have breast cancer which has spread to your lung.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups I'm going to recommend that you join the breast cancer and lung cancer groups if they are two separate cancers or the secondary breast cancer group if you have breast cancer which has spread to your lungs. They're all great places to ask questions, share experiences and get support.

To join the appropriate group just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

You say that "there seems to be no support, help or advice anywhere" but you should have been assigned a cancer nurse specialist (CNS) as a point of contact for just this purpose. They are a mine of information and if they don't know the answer they'll speak to your consultant and get back to you. If you haven't been assigned one yet you could phone your consultant's secretary and ask her for the details.

It would be great if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.

  • Thank you so much for replying. You were a ray of light on a very dark night. I have taken your advice and joined the secondary breast cancer group. People there have been very friendly and supportive. I have also contacted the CNS's, people I didn't even know existed until you said. I feel slightly more in control. Once again a big thank you x

  • You are very welcome and I'm glad to hear that you're getting support from the members of the secondary breast cancer group.
