Hi everyone, my mum is currently in Christie’s however we are hoping for a discharge early this week. She has stage 4 stomach cancer and is finding getting comfortable really difficult. She has been sleeping on a recliner chair in Christie’s and I wondered if anyone has one that is no longer used at all that I could buy off them or if anyone can point me in the right direction of being able to get one at short notice from somewhere? Thanks in advance

  • Hi and welcome. Sorry to hear about your mum, but good to know you are getting her home. When we cared for my mum, our GP referred us to local social services who provided various aids, such as commode, bathing etc., but we did not need a chair. Could I suggest you call the free Mac helpline on 0808 808 0000 (8-8pm) who will be able to advise what help your mum should be entitled to. We also have a Carers Only Forum here which you may like to look at. There you will find others looking after loved ones. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi ,

I'm sorry it has taken so long to respond but I haven't been about so much recently.  Hopefully you have already managed to source a chair from the advice given by

I wondered if you had heard of groups called "Freecycle" or "Freegle".  Both groups are intended to help people recycle good quality used products rather than throwing them away.  They are organised on a local basis and often only one of them operates in a particular area.  You have to join (free) and agree to their rules.  People post what it is that they are trying to recycle and they invite others to contact them to ask for the item.  However, you can also apply for a specific item if one is not being offered at the moment.  I have seen things like beds, greenhouses, three piece suites, clothing, paving slabs, jam jars, garden plants and a whole variety of things.  The main drawback for most people is that you often have to arrange for collection and transport but compared to the cost of purchasing such an item it can still work out much better.

If you google either group I am sure you will be able to find one of them in your area.

    All the best,

    Gragon x
