My friends husband has been diagnosed with stomach cancer which has spread throughout his body.

He has been confirmed he is at stage 3 and was going to get chemo to help him.

But has now been told he is not as urgent as others. He is only 37 and has 2 children aged 14-7. Plus his wife suffers severe depression and is now hearing voices. She also has a mental health nurse. Shama is literally going out of her mind with worry and is fearing the worst so cannot concentrate on anything as is constantly breaking down.

Can anyone give me any advice how to help her and as to why her husband is not classed as urgent when his cancer has spread throughout?

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that your friend's husband has been diagnosed with stomach cancer which has spread.

As the community is divided up into cancer specific groups I hope you don't mid me suggesting that you join the stomach cancer group where you can ask questions and share experiences with others who have this type of cancer.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' on the page that opens. You can then copy and paste your question from here into a new post after selecting '+New' or '+' (depending on the device you're using).

The best person for your friend to talk to in order to find out why her husband is not considered urgent would be her husband's cancer nurse specialist (CNS). They act as a point of contact for the patient and will be able to access his records and explain what treatment he will be having, when he'll be having it and why it's not considered urgent.

It is important that your friend looks after herself and you might like to encourage her to join this community herself so that she can get support from other people who are caring for someone with cancer. She could also talk through her feelings with one of the nurses on the Support Line by calling 0808 808 0000. It's free to call and is available every day from 8am to 8pm.

Has she spoken to her GP or mental health nurse about how she's feeling as I'm sure they could offer support as well?
