Kennel cough vaccine for dogs

Odd subject title I know but after the most stressful day for hubby and I our little dog needed her annual injections.

After a full morning of tests and bad news at the hospital I took hubby back to the hospice and then had to take our very old dog to the vet as she’d had a fall. It wasn’t our usual vet and she broke the news that doggy has developed a heart murmur but said  she’d do her annual boosters  whilst I was in surgery.

By now I was in pieces as the day had been awful but after she gave the kennel cough vaccine she said to keep her away from anyone on chemo for at least six weeks!!!!!

Hubby is due to come out of the hospice tomorrow, doggy has numerous health issues and so now I’m told to keep them apart for six weeks.

Has anyone heard of this? Does a anyone have any knowledge about this issue?  I really would appreciate any advice or help as the vet almost made it seem I had to choose between hubby and doggy.

What do I do now?

  • Heya June,

I'm afraid the vet is right, and for your husband's safety, you're best keeping them apart.

The problem is, the kennel cough vaccine is a live vaccine, and all the others are dead ones. Also, as the vaccine is sprayed up her nose, she can be sneezing live virus around the house. The virus can be passed to immunocompromised humans as a respiratory illness such as whooping cough, pneumonia, or similar.

Annoyingly, your dog only needs the kennel cough vaccine if she's going into kennels. Other wise, it's one that can be missed out and picked up at any point should she need to be kennelled. So had the vet said something BEFORE giving it, this could all have been avoided. So it's definitely worth putting in a complaint to the vet practice. It won't help you now in your current predicament, but it will hopefully stop anyone else being put in such a position.

Sorry I couldn't give better news, and I hope you manage to work something out!

I have no medical training, everything I post is an opinion or educated guess. It is not medical advice.

  • Thank you for your reply.

It is so very annoying because due to my health issues our dog hasn’t been in kennels for thirteen years and now with this situation there is certainly no plans for her to be put in kennels. Two year's ago when hubby was first diagnosed the vet came to the house and did her boosters in our own home  with hubby present and again last year at the surgery hubby was in the room as the vaccine was given. No advice was given regarding hubby health situation.

I am certainly going to be contacting the surgery head office to raise this problem  with them.

Again thank you for your reply.
