Weightloss Support

So, I don't know about anyone else, but I've put on a lot of weight since diagnosis. And actually, when I look back then I was definitely slowing down before diagnosis and weight was slowly increasing, but nowhere near as fast as it has done since treatment began.

My weight gain hasn't been caused by steroids as is often the case with cancer, but instead it is a combination of bone mets reducing mobility, thyroxine making me hyperactive, and PCOS doing it's thing. So right now, I am just a sliver over 21 stone and 5'10". Two and a half weeks ago I was closer to 22 stone, which is where I decided enough was enough and something needed to change. That was also when I discovered that my womb cancer was oestrogen receptor positive, which meant that the excess fat was producing oestrogen and making the womb cancer worse and harder to suppress. That, was the main drive for the weight loss because there was no way I was going to let my cancer get worse if I could help it.

I also figured that there are probably other people out there in similar situations, where their 'new normal' has meant that they have put on a few pounds they don't want. And, as this website is all about support, then why didn't we band together and help each other lose weight?! An online and free weight watchers/Slimmers world/whoever else, where we share tips and tricks, products that we find that are healthy alternatives, and help track weightloss and cheer each other on.

So if you feel like trying to lose some weight with others, then please do jump on in. All shapes and sizes welcome!

  • Hi Arla

There's lots of fitness trackers/pedometers around.  I've got a Charge 2 from Fitbit, which syncs with my phone.  It measures steps, floors, calories and heart rate.  There are cheaper ones, depends what you want to monitor.

As far as ideal weight the calculation to work out your Body Mass Index is weight in kilograms divided by weight in metres squared.  So I'm about 75kg, 5'5" (1.65m) so BMI is 70/1.65x1.65 which is 27.5.  BMI should be 20-25.

Having said all that, any weight loss is good.  I used to go to Weight Watchers and they gave you a sticker with each 7lb loss.  5% loss has been shown to have real health benefits

  • Heya,

There should be one on your phone already? If you've got a Samsung, it's called Samsung Health. If you're on an iphone, there should just be a health app, a little heart icon? If you've got something else..... well, no clue. lol

Depending on the app you've got, then yes the app will track your steps. But you need to carry your phone with you every time you move to get an accurate count. So I bought myself a step counter thing. There are LOADS out there if you wanted one, to fit every budget.

Well done you for sharing your weight, and that's awesome that you've lost 4 lbs already!! That's a fab start!

My target is what my BMI lists it should be to be 'healthy'. However I have a feeling that if I actually got down to 12 stone I would look skeletal!! I'm very broad shouldered, and big built - so the amount of fat I have doesn't look as bad as it might - supposedly. But yeh, if I got down to 12 stone I think it wouldn't look healthy. So while that might be the medical professions preferred weight for me, I'll be happy if I can get down into a size 14/16 clothes again - whatever weight that might have me at. :D

Ahhhh I see Ann. That's good to know for other people too, though I'm sure they'll all be told and given the same advice as you were. :)

  • Thanks - yes it's great.  I used to do aerobics but it was the same routines every week but when I staryes Tae Kwon Do there was always some new to learn.  Even now each lesson is different and always something to work towards.  I feel my fitness is slowly returnjng.  I had docetaxel as part of my chemo though that has reduced the feeling in my feet.  We have bare feet for training so I'm struggling a bit with this.

  • Hi Julie,

    Welcome to the group!

    Hi all,

I managed to find an app on my iPhone, its been counting my steps for months! It's a shame I don't always have my phone in my pocket, from what it's recorded I think I'll target 5000 steps and see how I get on, probably not well lol.

  • Lol.

That's kinda awesome though, as you can see that you're probably more active than you thought you were!

I'm only on 203 steps today of my target 1,000. So I'm not doing great today. Think I've been doing too much the last few days because today I've been sore and sleepy.

    Bleh.

Hi Lass I was 20 stone when I went into surgery. My hubby and I have followed Chris Poles plan, not a diet. But between us we have lost 13 stones in the last year. Simple plan, 3 key ingredients, protein, carb and fat. Breakfast 30 mins from waking and the every 3 hours. 5 time a day in all. Breakfast eat a combination of all 7 days a week, for me the 2 eggs on one butter toast, 2,3,4 protein and carb. 5, protein and fat 7 days a week.  Veg with all meals, fruit is carb.

Do for 4 days then switch for 2 days to breakfast the same 2,3,4 meal to protein and fat.  Eve the same.

Day 7 carb day plus 1000 calms more between 2,3,4

Enjoy, takes a bit of getting used to but works a treat with no cravings.

Book reference is Transformation for life, Chris and Heidi Powel.

Hope this picks you up and keeps you well. Barb

  • Hey Barb,

That's awesome! Well done to you and the hubby! 13 stone is a massive achievement!

I think eating 5 times a day will be a struggle for me as I have to remind myself to eat even once a day sometimes. I've lost my appetite on the whole unfortunately, even though I'm a massive foodie!

I'm up to eating twice a day fairly regularly, with fruit maybe as a third time. So.... progress!!

But thanks for letting us know what has worked for you, as while it might not be good for me, one of the other folks reading or playing along might find it fits for them!

Hope your weight stays stable or continues to drop, wherever you are with it now!

  • What about putting the step counter on one of the cats and letting it make up the rest?

This is why I'm a bad influence!
