So, I don't know about anyone else, but I've put on a lot of weight since diagnosis. And actually, when I look back then I was definitely slowing down before diagnosis and weight was slowly increasing, but nowhere near as fast as it has done since treatment began.

My weight gain hasn't been caused by steroids as is often the case with cancer, but instead it is a combination of bone mets reducing mobility, thyroxine making me hyperactive, and PCOS doing it's thing. So right now, I am just a sliver over 21 stone and 5'10". Two and a half weeks ago I was closer to 22 stone, which is where I decided enough was enough and something needed to change. That was also when I discovered that my womb cancer was oestrogen receptor positive, which meant that the excess fat was producing oestrogen and making the womb cancer worse and harder to suppress. That, was the main drive for the weight loss because there was no way I was going to let my cancer get worse if I could help it.

I also figured that there are probably other people out there in similar situations, where their 'new normal' has meant that they have put on a few pounds they don't want. And, as this website is all about support, then why didn't we band together and help each other lose weight?! An online and free weight watchers/Slimmers world/whoever else, where we share tips and tricks, products that we find that are healthy alternatives, and help track weightloss and cheer each other on.

So if you feel like trying to lose some weight with others, then please do jump on in. All shapes and sizes welcome!

    Hi Lass

Firstly, thanks for adding me to the front page. I fully intend to achieve my target to get rid of this terrible paunch.

Now about your back Lass. Have you been to the doctor? As one who has had to become a wheelchair user due to a back problem, I'd advise you to go. I was diagnosed with incurable bone marrow cancer in March 2015, I've been told that a stem cell transplant won't be offered as the operation would probably kill me, but I believe there's always hope!

Within a year of the diagnosis, my back pain became so severe that I was advised that a wheelchair would be the best option for me as I could hardly put one foot on the ground pain free.

I've been to chronic pain unit and had MRI scans, and a second opinion (requested by the consultant treating me), and unfortunately nothing can be done so the weight has piled on. In layman's terms, I've TWO discs out, osteoarthritis of the spine, osteoporosis of the spine and degeneration of the spine also.

I'm a member of MacMillan's Move More here in Northern Ireland and enjoying it greatly. I've just finished the Healthwise scheme and really enjoyed the gym work- I'd never been in a gym before in my life. So you can see I've started, however with my name on the front page now, there's no hiding place.

Oh, I've also been diagnosed with heart disease, following a heart attack and heart surgery about 6 years ago also, therefore I need to watch my weight in that respect too.

Take care Lass, and go to the doctor please!

  • Heya,

I'm actually just back from the Dr. 111 sent me to urgent care this morning. His diagnosis? The weather.

Apparently I can't put my left foot on the ground without shooting pains that double me over because of the weather. While the pain in my upper back is a pulled muscle where I fell down the stairs, and the weather is making it worse. The stiff neck I'm starting with? Cold weather, probably a draft from an open window while I slept.. ... despite all my windows being closed to keep the Houdini cats inside!

Waste of £10 - that I can't afford to waste - and energy. As I'm now absolutely exhausted and in a load of pain.

    Grump, grump, grump!

  • Today is a getting drunk and eating takeaway day. I've decided. I've not decided what sort of takeaway yet, though I'm leaning towards cake and icecream.....

  • I think I would be pretty ticked off too, sounds like they were rather unsympathetic and patronising. Not really the sort of care you should get. I hope your back at least starts to feel better soon

  • I'm sure that after my second pint of gin and tonic it will be feeling a bit better. Gin works better than any painkiller I've found out there!

I'm currently drinking Neroli - it was one from my advent calendar. It's got a strong rose water flavour. It's quite nice, but I don't think it's worth buying a bottle for myself.

And yes, you'd think that if someone with a high tolerance for pain, due to being in it constantly, is telling you that something REALLY hurts - you'd pay attention!

  • Well what a tube of a doctor, weather! Even i could have given you a better diagnosis than that! What a shame you had to waste money and cause yourself extra pain to get there.

Hopefully your team can sort you out on Monday.

Turning to gin and a nice dinner sounds like a good plan to me and I think you deserve ice cream and cake for listening to such rubbish this morning.

    Lots of love

  • I'e had a rose water flavoured gin, and I'm now on a hot sauce flavoured gin.

And I've gone for sushi as a takeaway. Figured it was the healthy option and knew I'd feel too guilty and not enjoy anything fried or fatty the day after.

And I don't plan on speaking to anyone on Monday doc wise. No point if it's just pulled muscles.

  • Well done staying on track with the sushi. I've had home made fajitas, they were good and reasonably healthy.

I hope it eases up, maybe a night on the booze will do the trick. Have you got a gel or cream painkiller that you can put on? I know that's sometimes a no go, I end up pulling new muscles trying to rub it in lol.

  • Lol. Yeh, even if I had some then I couldn't reach where it needs to go.

See your fajitas, do you know what makes then healthier? Quorn. Fajitas are perfect for it too, because the spice mix you use takes away the odd taste. And if you mix in mushrooms, it makes it even better. Then all the normal lettuce and cucumber etc. are fine, and you can then get reduced fat versions of guac, sour cream, cheese, and salsa.

Cuts the calories RIGHT down. 100g of quorn mince is like, 95 calories. 100g of extra lean minced beef - 85% - is 215 calories.

  • I didn't do guacamole or salsa but I had low fat cheese and low fat sour cream, the quorn is a good idea for my next attempt and I love mushrooms too. Yum!
