Help needed following mastectomy

Hi all, I’m new here and this is my first post. I currently only have a provisional diagnosis as my her2 result came as borderline and lymph node biopsies came back reactive, I therefore had a single mastectomy and one lymph node removed for further testing before they can plan further treatment.

The operation went well but I’m really struggling with not being able to have a proper wash or using deodorant on that side while the dressings are still on and I’m starting to smell! Does have anyone have any advice or suggestions to solve this issue? Thanks in advance Relaxed

  • Hiya,

I'm glad that overall you're doing ok. It's obviously still early days if you have dressings still in place. I didn't have a mastectomy but had lump excision and removal of 2 lymph nodes last summer during the hot weather.  I found that wearing loose fitting clothing & refreshing my armpit with a cotton flannel and luke warm water a couple of times a day was enough was enough.

It might be an idea to talk with your breast care nurse team too incase they have anything to suggest.

Hang on in there, when your dressings come off & your wounds are full healed you'll have more options

  • Thanks for replying. I’ve tried loose clothing and a flannel but it’s just not enough for me.

I have tried to speak with my breast care nurses this morning but could only get through to their admin who rather than let me speak to them directly she just kept putting me on hold, asking the nurses my questions and then coming back to me which I wasn’t very impressed with. She also said I’m fine to use shower gel and deodorant now when I was told the opposite by one of the nurses a few days ago, it’s very frustrating being told different things all the time!

I’m 7 days post surgery so dressings can come off Monday thankfully Sweat smile

  • Good luck! It was a huge relief when my dressings came off so I hope it's the same for you x
