Chemotherapy Dilema

Hi everyone

I was diagnosed on 9th April. Invasive ductal, tumour size 21mm with 4mm macro disease in sentinel node. After clearance 1/6 nodes effected.

I have recently met with my oncologist and we used predict to get a reoccurrence score of 4% benefit from chemotherapy .

Although my oncologist was very helpful , she has ultimately left the decision re chemo up to me !

My tumour is oestrogen positive only and hormone treatment gives me a benefit of 4% .

After discussion the oncologist suggested onco type to give me a more definitive result (which I will have to pay for myself)

 I am 47 years old.

I have read that current recommendations are that chemo should not be recommended if benefit is less than 5%.

Has anyone been in a similar situation

All advice gratefully received.

Thank you

Alice M

  • Hi ,

My oncologist recommend chemo, so I did go with it in the end however I struggled with whether to do it or not.

You can only make the decision based on what you know right now.

I’m actually glad I did it now. I know I would have been thinking ‘what if’ all the time.

At my last meeting with my oncologist he said I’m in remission so hopefully, fingers crossed it stays that way.

Wishing you all the best x

, I am also on the Optima Trial. I dithered when I got Chemo and was going to pull out of the Trial, however over Christmas I thought about it whilst watching my kids (4 of them) and thought maybe it was meant to be, so I’m through the Chemo and radiotherapy and out the other side now.

Just 7 yrs of tablets and 10 yrs of Drs keeping a close eye in things, which for me is reassuring.

    Best wishes x

  • Hi Londonmumof2,

You asked him prior to your Op regarding spread to the rest of the nodes and he said no? 11 nodes in 3 levels sounds quite low and I'm pleased I've seen that because I had 2/4 micromets at level 1 and I've always worried there could have been more affected, even though my Surgeon has tried to reassure me, he also said I would only have a small number of nodes due to my small size/frame.

    Best Wishes.

  • He didn't do the initial scan, he'd looked at it through, as did I, and it looked clear. About 20% of people who appear clear aren't, which is the reason for the sentinel scan. I understand that anything from below 10 -  40 is considered normal. I was happy with the number given (especially that they were all clear!) as I trust my surgeon,  think he's excellent.

I watched a YouTube video of clearance surgery and it's obvious what needs to be removed:)
