DCIS - Lumpectomy margins not clear

Hi

I was recently diagnosed with high grade DCIS, I’ve had 2 lumpectomies in the last month , today my results confirmed my margins weren’t clear again.

Next step is a mastectomy , need to make a decision whether to stay flat or have reconstruction at the same time.

I know reconstruction is also available at a later date if I wanted it as well.

I’m not really sure how I feel right now it’s been a whirlwind of emotions since finding out and going through the surgeries and now this decision feels even heavier.

I have a few days to make a decision , just looking for some support & guidance from anyone who has been through this or is going through it.

Thanks

  • hi there, i understand the indecision

i had 2 lumpectomies but clear margins on the second, i have thought if i should have had a mastectomy and i sometimes wish i had just done it.

The question you need to answer is, yes it will be gone thankfully but I guess you need to decide what you can handle now.

my aunt had a single mastectomy and waited years before reconstruction, she is happy now but had to go through chest expanders and such.

that being said Cathy Bates (actress) said he has a double and never reconstructed and is happy.

You just need to do what you feel most comfortable with and in the position you are in there is so much, what if and then what.

i think i may not be helping, i apologise,

but in my hindsight think i would have gone for a reconstruction and reduction on the other side if i did it over again.
