Good evening, I've recently started Imiquimod cream 3 alternate days for two weeks.I have finished the first weeks course and absolutely nothing has happened. Is this normal ? Or do I presume it's not going to work.IIt wasn't the specialists first choice of cream, but there was national shortage of chemo cream.

I was diagnosed a week ago with cancer just above the top lip line.

  • Hello Dixie

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. I see that you have joined the skin cancer forum. I hope you are finding this helpful.

I’m Michael, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists here on the Macmillan Support Line.

Imiquimod is an immunotherapy cream to treat skin cancer.

Our information discusses that you usually apply the cream once a day, 5 days a week. Treatment is usually for 6 weeks. This is dependent on the condition being treated.

It may take time for the cream to be effective, depending on the dose and frequency that the cream is prescribed, however we do not have access to your medical records and cannot advise why your specialist has prescribed it 3 alternate days for two weeks.

We strongly recommend that you contact your specialist to discuss this, and to tell them that have not noticed any benefit from the cream, so far.

Often if you have difficulty contacting them, you can call their secretary, who can get them to call you back.

I hope this information is useful. Please do not hesitate to get back in contact by email, webchat or phone, if you need further information or support.

The Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial and emotional support. You can call us free from landlines and from most mobile phone networks* on 0808 808 00 00, 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm.

    Best wishes,

    Michael
