Mutation in colorectal cancer - questions for consultant?

Hi everyone,

I’ve gone down a rabbit hole with what my mutation means (KRAS Q61H). Everything I’m reading says ‘poorer prognosis’. Just wondering if anyone has any insight to this and/or personal experience. I’ve just had my last round of Folfox (first line treatment) and have a meeting with the consultant next week. I want to feel a bit more prepared with questions etc

help!

  • Hi Anne523989e66c0

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome back I see that you are on other groups. I hope you are finding these helpful.  I’m Kate one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists here on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am glad to hear that you have finished your first line treatment. I hope you recover well and have not had too many side effects.

I am sorry to hear that you have gone down the rabbit hole with trying to find information on the KRAS mutation. Please try not to search the internet as there is a lot of unsafe information out there that can cause more anxiety.

The consultants do tests on the bowel cancer cells to check for gene mutations as this can give them information on the cell growth.

With knowing that you have KRAS mutation the colorectal team can then decide which treatment is more likely to work for you.

I am glad you have an appointment with your consultant next week and it is good to be prepared and ask questions at this appointment so that you know the plan going forward.

It can be a very emotional time when you are diagnosed with Cancer. Many people find that by following a healthy balanced diet and staying active it can give them back a sense of control.

I hope this information is useful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in contact by email, webchat or phone, if you need further information or support.

The Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial and emotional support. You can call us free from landlines and from most mobile phone networks* on 0808 808 00 00, 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm.

    Best wishes,

    Kate,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
