Can anyone advise on the best type of laxatives to use with codeine types of pain relief?
The oncologist suggested that ones that soften the stools isn’t best as it’s better to have something that ‘promotes movement’. he suggested I ask the community.
thank you

Welcome to our online community, I wonder if you would find some of our forums a helpful and supportive place to visit.

Thank you for your question about laxatives and codeine. My name is Luzia and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry that you are experiencing constipation. Unfortunately, this is a common and unpleasant side effect of certain painkillers such as codeine. Your doctor will need to prescribe you laxatives. There are different types of laxatives. Some soften stools (poo) and make them easier to pass. Others stimulate the bowel to push the stools along more quickly. You may need a combination of laxatives to prevent constipation. Do not take any laxatives without checking with your GP practice or Pharmacy.

We suggest that you get assessed for constipation by your GP, Practice Nurse, District Nurse or Pharmacist. I understand your oncologist suggested asking the community, this is the group of professionals that he meant.

Having cancer and associated symptoms and side effects is often a difficult time for people. Please call one of our nurses directly if you want to talk over your situation. We may then be able to give you further information.

    Take care,

    Luzia
