Lymphoedema after Breast Cancer Surgery?

Hello - I had breast cancer surgery and lymph node removal last February.  For the last couple of months I have noticed my arm is a bit sore, heavy and larger than the other one and I have some swelling in my armpit (beside my removal scar).  Could this be lymphoedema and if it is what should I do?

Thanks, Linda

  • Hi LSG1,

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Jo and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

It’s good to hear that you have completed your treatment for breast cancer. However, I’m sorry that you have noticed changes to your arm and some swelling in your armpit over the past couple of months. This sounds like a difficult time, and I’m pleased that you’ve reached out to us for advice and support.

Whilst the symptoms you describe could be due to lymphoedema, there are other  potential causes too. It would therefore not be possible for us to say for sure from the information you have given.

We would advise that you get in contact with your hospital team to discuss this. They are best placed to assess your symptoms and offer specific advice and support as they are familiar with your cancer diagnosis and treatment. If you have a breast care nurse within your hospital team, then you could give them a call in the first instance.

If your doctor or specialist nurse think you have lymphoedema, they should refer you to a lymphoedema specialist who will then be able to confirm a diagnosis.

Health professionals with specialist knowledge in treating lymphoedema may include: specialist lymphoedema nurses, breast care nurses, doctors, physiotherapists or occupational therapists. If it is difficult to diagnose, you may have further tests.

There are lymphoedema practitioners throughout the UK, although some areas lack appropriate NHS services. If you would like to discuss where your local provider is then you could contact the Lymphoedema Support Network.

Our Understanding Lymphoedema booklet has lots of useful information about ways to reduce your risk, manage symptoms and how to cope with the emotional effects of lymphoedema.

I see that you have joined a couple of forums on our online community and hope that you are finding these supportive.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch. You can speak with the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or email us.

I hope this information is helpful.

    Best wishes,

    Jo
