Hi

just looking for some hope

my mum has advanced bowel cancer and option was always management - however the first 3 types of treatment have been ineffective and the cancer has progressed. She is now moving onto the 4th treatment option (which is tablets only?)

‘I’m so scared and I am desperate to have some hope and some positive news - it has been bad news over and over and I don’t understand why she hasn’t responded so far and will this just be the same?

  • Dear Annabelle_

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Karen and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Firstly, I’m so sorry, Annabelle, this is such a scary and difficult time for you right now. I’m so pleased that you have reached out to us on the support line. If you feel able, I really want to encourage you to give us a call, often just chatting things through and sharing how you are feeling in a confidential, safe space can help. We are here today and every day until 8pm.

It's only natural to feel a range of different emotions when someone you love has cancer, particularly as you say Mum has an advanced bowel cancer and has had three different types of treatment that have not been effective in controlling it. Sometimes treatments can work for a while, but when someone has an advanced cancer, they can stop being as effective over time and then other treatments need to be considered. It’s positive to hear that Mum’s treatment team are recommending another treatment option. Just because Mum hasn’t responded or has stopped responding to previous treatments, does not necessarily mean that the next treatment won’t be effective in helping to control her cancer and/or reduce Mum’s symptoms. If Mum gives her permission, it may be helpful for you to arrange a discussion with Mum’s consultant or hospital clinical nurse specialist.

I can see that you’ve joined the bowel cancer forum, I hope you are finding this supportive. You may also wish to take a look at the family and friends forum and carers forum, to share experiences and gain support from others in a similar situation.

It’s important to get the support you need, Annabelle, this practical and emotional support information may be helpful to take a look at.  Bowel Cancer UK charity also has a range of information, support and an online community.

Often, we are more able to explain more and support you better over the telephone, you can ask questions and share more about Mum’s situation. Please don’t hesitate to give one of our nurses a call. We are always here for you.

    Take care,

    Karen, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
