  • Dear Springer

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Karen and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see that you have joined a few of our online forums, I hope that you are finding these welcoming and helpful.

I’m sorry to hear of your diagnosis of Chronic Lymphatic Leukaemia (CLL). CLL is a slow-growing blood cancer that may not need treatment at first. When it does need treatment, there are many effective drugs that can keep the CLL under control.

There are a wide range of treatments available for CLL. We don’t have access to your NHS medical records on the support line, but your treatment team may recommend one or a combination of drug treatments depending on your individual situation. When deciding which treatments to recommend for you, your treatment team will consider the following: -

    • Your overall health and fitness
    • Genetic test results on your CLL cells
    • Your response to any previous treatment you may have had for your CLL
    • Your personal preferences, circumstances and practicalities

There's more detailed information on the different drugs and drug combinations here.

You may have already been given treatment options by your consultant or have not yet been given information on what treatment your team is recommending. This information on questions to ask your healthcare team and help with making treatment decisions may be useful to help prepare questions for further discussion with your consultant and clinical nurse specialist.

It's only natural to feel a range of emotions when making decisions and waiting to start treatment. Sometimes it can help to focus on practical things that you can do when preparing for treatment. You may wish to give one of our nurses a call to chat things through. We are always here for you.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any other information or support needs, the Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial, and emotional support.

    Best wishes

    Karen, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
