Medroxyprogestrone and mirena for atypical hyperplasia

I had a coil fitted a month ago to the day and was told to continue the tablets for a month then stop. 18 days ago I started bleeding and haven’t stopped. My nurse advised to continue taking the tablets to let the coil settle in, but I think it’s better to stop and clear out the built up lining.

I’ve asked questions of my nurse on what I should do, I only have 12 days of tablets left and have been waiting over a week for a response.

I’m not sure whether to stop or continue the tablets as I would think you want a drop in progesterone. Not really sure why I am taking the tablets and what they are suppose to be doing.

  • Hi Cherry4f4059,

Thanks for getting in touch. I’m Eileen one of the nurses on the Macmillan Support Line. I hope you find the online community a supportive and informative space.

I’m sorry to hear about the issue you’re experiencing with ongoing bleeding. Some people can experience issues with bleeding after having the Mirena coil fitted. I would imagine your nurse had recommended continuing the medroxyprogesterone in the hope it would help ease the bleeding.

As we are not part of the NHS and don’t have access to your medical information, we are unable to provide advice on whether you should continue with the medication. We would always recommend that you contact a medical professional involved in your care if you’re having new, ongoing, or worsening symptoms.

As you have not had a response from your nurse we would recommend contacting them again. If you are unable to get in touch with them but you have a consultant at the hospital, you can contact them by ringing the hospital switchboard and asking to be put through to their secretary. If this is not possible then please speak with your GP and ask to be reviewed regarding the ongoing symptoms you’re experiencing. It’s important that you receive the correct clinical advice regarding next steps.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you have further questions or concerns.

    Best wishes,
