Hello had my kidney removed but back home now but suffering from High Blood pressure is this normal just after a operation ?

  • Hi PENNYPITTf70983,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. I hope you find it useful.

My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.

I’m glad to hear that you are now at home following your surgery to remove a kidney.

You have asked if high blood pressure is normal after an operation. High blood pressure after surgery can be due several factors and is usually temporary. However, as you now only have one kidney your blood pressure should be monitored as high blood pressure can damage your remaining kidney. You haven’t said if you are checking your blood pressure at home or whether your doctor is monitoring it.

On the Support Line we are separate to the NHS and do not have access to your medical records or NHS systems. If your doctor is not aware that your blood pressure is high, then it’s important that you inform them. They will be able to discuss this in detail with you and give appropriate information and advice for your situation.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona P,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
