Hi I’m having Oesophageal cancer surgery in January I’d like to know what happens about the operation and afterwards please

  • Hi Chris8573,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. I hope you find it useful.

My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.

I’m sorry to read about your diagnosis of oesophageal cancer. You may find it helpful to look at our oesophageal cancer forum. There’s nothing quite like the support you can receive from others in a similar situation.

You mention that you are having surgery in January. The main surgery for oesophageal cancer is called an oesophagectomy. You can read more about it here. This information tells you about the surgery and what to expect afterwards. I hope you find it helpful.

We have information about prehabilitation which you may find interesting to read. It may help you with preparing for the surgery.

We often find that talking things through can help. That way we can ask questions and make sure you get the relevant information. You’re always welcome to call and speak to one of our nurses on the Support Line. We are available every day from 8am to 8pm on 0808 808 0000.

You may also find it useful to look at the information from the OPA Cancer Charity.

I hope all goes well with your surgery.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona P,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
