hi. just joined here as looking for advice. I have had an enlarged prostate for a couple of years but over last few months have been experiencing severe lower back and going pains. after several trips to chiropractor and physio I thought that this may be linked to prostate and saw doctor yesterday who seemed to agree and has suggested full range of blood tests. My father had prostate cancer in his late 60's (I am 56)

my blood tests are booked at doctors a week away my wife suggested we could just go to a blood clinic at one of the local hospitals as we are there this afternoon for an appointment for her. could anyone advise if this is acceptable / ok.

hoping I am worrying about nothing but following Google searches have to say I am quite concerned it is cancer and has spread to bones causing the pain which is severe some days.

any help / advice would be be very much appreciated

  • I have answered my own questionGrinning

and I am off to Blood clinic at local hospital this afternoon. GP has advised this apparently is perfectly acceptable. much happier I have cut a week off waiting to find out if there is anything to worry about.

  • Hi

Welcome to our online community and thanks for posting your question. My name is Amy and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

We’re sorry to hear you are worried about cancer and understand you are keen to get your bloods checked as soon as possible.

In theory – just getting your bloods done at the blood clinic whilst up at the hospital makes sense, but different areas follow different protocols in accessing these clinics. As we are the national support line, I’m not able to advise what happens in your local area.

It would be helpful to give the GP practice a call to ask if this is something they recommend. Or you can get in touch with the blood clinic directly and ask if they would be able to accommodate you as a ‘walk in’.

If you are anxious about the wait and worried about your symptoms getting worse in the meantime, you should make another appointment with your GP to discuss this.

I hope this helps and please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you need any further support.

    Best wishes,

Amy C, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
