Hi

I contacted my doctor in regards to my periods, I'm 51 always had heavy periods, last month af ter about a week of being finished from my period I bled for 13 days not always heavy and sometimes enough to dhow on a pad or other times just when I wiped, I'm on a single iron tablet as I was diagnosed years back with being anemic I have blood tests to monitor. The doctor asked for bloods and my iron levels were 118 they are usually around 132 , he put me on 2 iron tablets a day then asked about my bowel movements etc , I'm not experiencing any issues, asked if I do a wfit test and it's come back positive at 66 , the doctor tried calling me last week I was on holiday no signal, I've made contact with my surgery this week but no phone call as promised.

I suffer with back problems due to s slipped disc about 10 years + and have had issues with lower back pain gor several months but nothing I thought was an issue for the doctors.

Ive currently got pain in lower back and down my legs which ive had before i think scatia?  But im thinking all sorts and extremely worried that i have  bowel cancer

Tmy mum had polyps around my age so I'm guessing it might be that but I really don't know what to think.

Can you advise please

  • Hi

Thanks for getting in touch with us at Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is Amy and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

We’re sorry to hear you have not heard back from the GP yet this week. It’s important you get back in touch with them today to ask for an urgent appointment to discuss your qFIT results and make sure they are aware of the worsening back pain over the last few months. This would usually trigger an urgent referral on the faster diagnosis pathway.

Let the receptionist know you have had a positive qFIT test, have worsening back pain which is now going down your legs and that you are worried about cancer. This should help them to prioritise an appointment for you.

If you are unable to be seen, you can give 111 a call and explain the same thing.

You can also speak with the Macmillan Support Line team of experts. Phone free on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or send us an email

    Best wishes,

Amy C, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
