Having read about possible benefits of taking Turkey Tail supplements while travelling along the conventional cancer treatment route, would taking this supplement put conventional treatment in jeopardy. It seems that certain trials found these supplements helpful and that in Japan the supplement is recognised as beneficial. Would a cancer care team be able to discuss or is additional  therapies an unwelcome area?

  • Hello Auguste0fc2bf,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Karen and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see that you joined the lung cancer forum and chemotherapy forum, I hope you are finding these supportive and welcoming.

I hope that you are coping well with your treatment, Auguste0fc2bf.

Turkey tails, also known as Coriolus Versicolour, is a type of mushroom. There is currently not enough research evidence (please see the adverse reactions section in the link above) that any type of mushroom can prevent or cure cancer.

There is early research showing mushrooms may strengthen the immune system. However, a note of caution, this information about alternative therapies advises that some alternative therapies may be harmful and could have an adverse effect on conventional medicine, such as chemotherapy. It could stop the treatments working effectively. We strongly advise that you discuss with your oncologist before talking any supplements.

You may wish to give one of our nurses a call on the support line. If you have any further information or support needs, the Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial, and emotional support.

    Best wishes

    Karen, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
