Hi,

My father recently told me he has been diagnosed with first stage Liver Cancer.
He was advised that they would like to treat it with SIRTs method.
I live abroad and whilst he has made me aware of the procedure, he has said after the treatment he does nor have to go for another scan for 12 weeks, is this the usual procedure??

thank you

  • Hello BGDaz7e9d25,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community.

My name is Carole and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sorry to read about your father’s diagnosis of liver cancer.

I appreciate that he has made you aware of the procedure, but I wondered if this information on SIRT (selective internal radiation therapy) might be helpful to read.

It describes the tests that are done before treatment, as well as explaining how the treatment itself is given.

Afterwards, patients are followed up closely, and this might vary slightly between hospitals. However, regular blood tests are carried out, and some people might have a CT scan around 2 or 3 months after treatment.

I understand that you are abroad, but if you would like to talk to one of our nurses, the phone number is +44 207 091 2230. (please note that there is a charge when calls are made from phones based outside the UK)

You can chat to us online, if you prefer, and our Family and Friends online forum can be a good place to get support too.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Sending my best wishes,

    Carole
