  • Hi Samy9,

Thanks for getting in touch.  My name is Kelly and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists.

On the support line as we’re not directly involved with each persons care we are unable to assess any symptoms fully here.

However, we know that this can be a worrying time especially as it may not be clear at the moment what the exact cause of your lump and hand pain and could be due to.

There can be different reasons for having hand and pain numbness which may not be connected to the lump or always caused by cancer, for example Carpal tunnel syndrome

It is sometimes possible to have a small blood clot (DVT) in the arm which can press on the nerves and affect the hand. We’re not saying this is definitely happening but just the importance to rule out all potential causes with your doctor.

We would encourage you to get back in touch with your GP or even a practice nurse if it may be easier to get an appointment with them to assess your symptoms again today.  Especially if the hand pain and numbness is new or getting worse.

As they are directly involved with your care and know your full medical history, they can examine your arm and hand for you again to know how best to manage this.

They could also get in touch with the breast clinic again for you to try and find out when your appointment is likely to be with them.

You can also speak to NHS 111 if you are unable to speak to your GP today too.  They sometimes have out of hours GP services who may be able to offer some support and reassurance with your symptoms.

Although the priority is for you to get further reassurance for your symptoms today, I hope that you have been able to share your worries and have been able to get support by family and friends around you.

NHS Every Mind Matters also offers some self-directed wellbeing hints and tips to help with any worry and stress.

I hope this information was helpful.  Please know, you can always get back in touch as needed.

    Take care and best wishes,

    Kelly (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
