SCALP PROBLEMS

Please could you give me some advice for a very itchy, flaky scalp.  It is worse since I had chemotherapy.  I wear a wig when I go out as I had a skin graft on my head for melanoma.  I also have breast cancer and will soon be having radiotherapy.  I have had my lymph nodes removed under my left arm and a wide local excision on my  left breast.  I have about a quarter to half an inch of hair now and don't wear my wig indoors as that makes it even more itchy.  My scalp has never been this flaky and itchy before.  Thanks Pleasant Peasant.

  • Hi Pleasant Peasant,

Thanks for getting in touch, and welcome to the online community

My name is Ursula and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the Macmillan support line. . I see that you’ve joined a few of our forums.  I really hope you find them supportive and helpful.

Thank you for sharing details around your diagnoses and your previous and planned treatment. I am sorry to read that you are experiencing a very itchy, flaky scalp which has worsened since having chemotherapy.

As we are independent of the NHS and do not have access to medical records, we are therefore unable to offer personalised advice. We can, however, hopefully help signpost you to where you can get the right support and information for your query.

Whilst we are unable to recommend specific products we do have some general information on hair care including caring for your hair and skin.

The charity Cancer Hair Care has some guidance on scalp care which you may find helpful. They also offer telephone, email and postal support where you can contact a cancer hair care advisor, if you would like to get some more specialist advice about your itchy, flaky scalp.

Alternatively you may like to access a short workshop addressing scalp care through the charity Look Good Feel Better.

You may also find that people within the forums here are able to share their tips on how they have managed similar experiences. I hope this information is helpful, and please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you require any further information or support.

    Sending best wishes,

    Ursula

  • Thanks very much for that useful information Ursula. I have just tried something which may have worked but if not I will contact the other people or someone at the hospital when I am there.
