Hi
My husband loves swimming daily in our local sports centre. Is it safe to go post TURBT?
Thanks for advice

Hi Nat14,
Thanks for getting in touch. I hope you’re finding the online community a useful source of support and information. My name is Eileen and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.
I hope your husband is making a good recovery following his TURBT.
You don’t mention when he had his surgery, but it can take some time for the bladder to heal after the procedure.
General advice that is given during the recovery period is to avoid strenuous activities/exercise and heavy lifting for two to three weeks and be aware of signs of infection, like fever or smelly urine, which require prompt medical attention. During this time gentle exercise such as walking can be undertaken. Most people will have fully recovered within four to six weeks of surgery. Length of recovery can depend on general health and factors such as other medical conditions that might impact on the healing process.
As we are not part of the NHS and do not have access to your husband’s medical records it is difficult for us to advise exactly how soon he can go back to his daily swimming. We would recommend that he contacts his Clinical Nurse Specialist or Consultant at the hospital. As they have access to all relevant medical information, they are best placed to give advice specific to his situation.
I hope this information is helpful but if you would like to talk with one of our nurses on the phone in more detail, we would be happy to hear from you. You can call us free of charge on 0808 808 0000 or you can chat to us or email us. We are here every day from 8am to 8pm.
Best wishes,
Eileen
