Hi

i have lung cancer and had pneumonia in May, my recent ct in August shows no recurrence thank fully but does show a new solid nodule that wasn’t visible on my ct in May due to pneumonia consolidation, could this be due to cells that have gathered due to the inflammation?, I’m having another ct in November, I’m trying not to over think but its hard, any information would be appreciated

thanks

Elaine

  • Hello Elaine

My name is Rae and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurses here at Macmillan Cancer Support.  I can see that you are a regular user of the Online Community.  We hope you are finding it a supportive and helpful resource.

It sounds like it has been a challenging year for you Elaine.  It is common to develop pneumonia when you have lung cancer.  This is due to a weakened immune system resulting from  the cancer itself and add on top of that the treatments we can see you have had, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy.  When lung tissue is damaged, it can make it more prone to infection.

We understand that it can be a very worrying time when a new nodule appears on a CT.  As you have been given the results of no recurrence the lung cancer doctors must have decided it does not need further investigation at the moment.  The repeat CT in November is likely to be looking to see if there are any changes to the nodule.  It is a long time to wait until November, but you could give your clinical nurse specialist (CNS) at the hospital a call and discuss further with them.  They will be able to give you further details about the nodule and what their plan is.

Whilst waiting for the scan, it is always important to let you team know if you develop any new or worsening symptoms, such as shortness of breath, pain or weight loss.

Coping with uncertainty after treatment, and worrying whether the cancer will come back is a very common emotion.  Help is available with how you are feeling.  You are always welcome to chat through your concerns with our nurses on the support line.  There is also the Cancer Care Map where you can find local and national support available.  You can also speak to your GP for support.

    Best wishes,

    Rae
