Hello monymony,
My name is Michael and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.
Thanks-you for getting in touch with us.
I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing side effects, including sore mouth with ulcers, from chemotherapy tablets, that you are taking for your secondary breast cancer,
Chemotherapy can damage the cells that line your mouth or throat, causing mouth problems. Soreness and ulceration of the lining of the mouth or throat is called mucositis. It can be very painful.
On this platform we are unable to suggest any treatments, and we do not have access to your NHS records.
With any new, worsening or changing symptoms we always advise you seek medical help straightaway, this could be your 24-hour chemotherapy hotline, GP, NHS 111 or if you feel that your condition is ever life threatening then dial 999.
We would advise you to contact your 24-hour chemotherapy hotline, immediately, so that they can assess you, and prescribe or suggest something for you.
Cancer and its treatments can weaken the immune system.
You might get an infection if harmful organisms such as bacteria and viruses enter the body.
Your body’s immune system usually protects you from infection. But cancer and cancer treatment can stop the immune system from working properly.
It is important to try and avoid infection if your immunity is reduced.
Just to let you know we do have a secondary breast cancer forum which you can join, to meet others, share experiences & get emotional support.
Breast Cancer Now also provide a service called Someone Like Me, that you might want to look at.
I hope this is useful, and please do not hesitate to get in touch with us again
You may find it helpful to call our support line or contact us via Webchat. Our Macmillan Information Nurse Specialists are here to offer support and help with your questions on 0808 808 00 00 every day, 8 am-8 pm. You can also email us back, and we aim to reply within two working days.
