Bowel cancer right hemicolectomy surgery

I had a right hemicolectomy last year October. Was done by keyhole successful surgery and after the results came back that all was removed and nothing had spread and I did not need chemotherapy or anything else.

Just doing the surveillance program as per doctors etc.

The first CT scan I got a call saying l was 100 % and nothing had spread and nothing to worry about.  I did not see surgeon only spoke to colorectal nurse so it was a telephone conversation .

However a few weeks after that same nurse called to.yell me my surgeon wanted to to do an earlier CT scan as he saw on my liver that a node was a big enlarged or bigger than normal.   She said it did not mean anything serious but just a precaution.

I went to do the blood tests I was told to do sent to the hospital then did the CT scan.   Took a while I had not heard anything so I called them and the sane nurse was surprised I had not received a letter ( I still have not received a letter however I can see the letter on the NHS app )

Shevsaid everything was fine and doctor was happy with blood results as well as CTScan results

The blood markers where normal and she said they never found any lesions in the liver.   I was happy with what she told me but I have a concern which I raised with her.

Although I feel absolutely healthy and my colon seems to Work just fine in fact it is better than before surgery.   I am much more regular .

Indo still have a slight like dull pain or discomfort on the right hand side near the waist.  Specially when I lie down on that side which is how I normally sleep as I had a left shoulder replacement 3 years ago and still not comfortable lying on that side.

Some days I do not feel any dull pain on the right hand side I am not sure if it is certain.foods I eat but it is on the side of the liver .  So although I feel fine that dull pain worries me as its basically the same dull pain or discomfort I had before I had the right hemicolectomy.

So what I want to know is the following.   Theybtold me all is ok nothing has spread at ll.  Bloid tests normal and although surgeon was concerned about so.e bode in my liver a but enlarged after CT scan results say no lesions in the liver.

Should i still worry about the dull pain on the right side or should I just ignore it.  Most of the times it's when i lie on that side .  I am due for another CT scan when I am 1 year after surgery.and a colonoscopy at the sane time.  So should I wait for them or should I just ignore this dull pain what could cause it.  If there is nothing wrong with my liver?

  • Hi Mena

My name is Lynsay and I am one of the information nurses with Macmillan Cancer Support. Welcome to the online community. I hope you find it to be a helpful and supportive environment.

I am really pleased to hear that your further blood test and CT scan were clear. I can imagine it must have been really worrying to receive that call requesting a further scan, but it is reassuring that the doctor was happy with this.

I am however sorry to hear you are experiencing a dull right sided pain. We would never advise you to ignore a pain. We would encourage you to contact your nurse specialist or surgeon to discuss this. It would be helpful to note how often you have this pain and if anything seems to make it better or worse.

It is less likely that this pain is associated with cancer as you have had clear results, but it may be related to your surgery for example. Sometimes scar tissue can form or there may be some degree of nerve damage. That is why it is important to report this so it can be properly assessed as we currently don’t know what the cause of this pain is.

Speaking to your team about this pain could also give you some level of reassurance. It is not uncommon to worry about cancer coming back after treatment. Having this dull ache may cause you more worry about this, so understanding the other potential causes for this could be helpful.

I hope this is helpful. You are more than welcome to call us on the support line if you would like to chat this through with us.

    All the best
