Hi,

I had a mole removed 9 weeks ago and I'm still awaiting the results, however I have ben given the following update from the secretary who advised -

sample sent to outside lab (not hospital) who requested further tests, can you please advise why this might be the case? Should I be concerned?

Thanks

Thank you for getting in touch, my name is Pauline and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the support line.  Welcome to our online community. I hope you are finding it helpful.

I am sorry to hear that you have found yourself in this situation. Waiting for results for a possible skin cancer can cause a lot of emotions such as stress and anxiety.

Having a sample sent to another laboratory is very common and can happen for a number of reasons.

When a mole is sent to the laboratory for analysis there is an initial assessment which looks at what tests are needed. On some occasions this may mean sending to another laboratory because the equipment needed is not available in the initial laboratory or the expertise needed for that particular investigation is only available elsewhere. Another possibility is that the sample has been chosen as part of their quality control procedure.

It can be helpful to talk to someone about how this is affecting you and your wellbeing. You are more than welcome to give us a call on 0808 808 0808, from 8am til 8pm, seven days a week.

I hope this information was helpful.
