Hi if you have a pick line in your arm ready for chemo can you still go on a spa day to relax
Dear Deb2468a32f8a
Thank you for getting in touch, my name is Pauline and I am one of the Cancer Information nurses on the support line. Welcome to our online community. I hope you are finding it helpful.
Preparing for chemotherapy can evoke a lot of different emotions. A spa day sounds like a good idea to help you relax and prepare for the treatment. However, it is important to be cautious. This is because one of the side effects of chemotherapy is that it can have an impact on your immune system.
It may be advisable to discuss the spa with your nurse specialist or someone from your oncology team. They can talk to you about what is safe for you to do. You may also want to have a look at our information on tips to avoid infection.
Before going to the spa, it may be helpful to call ahead and let them know that you are due to commence chemotherapy, so that they know to use the appropriate oils and techniques, and ensure you are booked with someone trained in cancer care.
We have some useful information on complementary therapies, including a booklet that can be downloaded or ordered in paper copy from our website.
If you would like to discuss this is more detail, please feel free to give us a call on 0808 808 0000 (7days a week, 8am-8pm).
I hope this information was helpful.
