Hi I had a thyroidectomy July 24  for thyroid  cancer adjusted calcium levels went low to 2.05mmol 5 months after stopping supplements, gp put me back on calcium supplements 1 twice a day. Yesterday had blood test and results seem a bit strange they did bone profile test twice first test for adjusted calcium was low at 2.09mmol and second adjusted calcium was 2.22mmol.  Gp put no further action. Gp did request PTH but  lab  won't do   test because adjusted calcium in range but surely they should still do it to see how well its working, I have been referred to endocrinologist but appointment not until December. I have been getting mild twitching and aches. I have emailed endocrinology to tell them what has happened. I'm not sure if this will get me a quicker appointment. I just want to know if its permanent so it can be managed properly. Just wondered if there any other advice. I guess I've done the right thing letting endocrinology know. December a long time to wait.

  • Dear Miss Mole

Thank you for reaching out to us here at Macmillan Cancer Support, my name is Rae and I am a cancer information nurse specialist.

A feeling of uncertainty about blood test results can often cause worry and anxiety.  It may be helpful to speak to your clinical nurse specialist (CNS) about results, this may be who you have emailed in endocrinology.  You certainly have done the right thing in letting endocrinology know, I am sure that they will contact you shortly.  If not, please feel that you can contact them again.

You can also speak to your GP again about your concerns, especially if any of your symptoms start to feel worse.

Twinges and cramps can occur when calcium drops.  These often occur in the fingertips, toes and around the lips.

Although not directly related to the question that you are asking, it can be helpful to choose positive lifestyle changes after treatment.  This can help to improve your well-being and long-term health.

We are more than happy to have a chat with you about the above information and any further concerns or questions you may have.  Please do not hesitate to speak to our nurses on the support line if you feel it would help.

    Best wishes,

    Rae
