I had hormone positive breast cancer and have had a mastectomy.  I am on anastrozole for 5 years.  No chemo or radio required.  Is it safe for me to take collagen?

  • Hi Angmc65

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community. My name is Sherrye and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

At Macmillan Cancer Support as we are a cancer charity that is separate from the NHS we have no access to anyone’s medical records so we are not able to give any advice or recommendations on any type of supplementation including collagen.

Your medical team are best placed to discuss this with you. As they are directly involved in your care and know your situation best. They can check that taking collagen is safe for you and possibility give you a recommendation.

The body produces collagen from amino acids, which are readily available in a balanced diet. If your diet provides sufficient protein; your body should be able to produce enough collagen without the need for supplementation.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Sherrye H,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
