Hello, I had grade 3 estrogen pos breast cancer in August 2016, lumpectomy, chemo and radiotherapy. My breast has become itchy and painful in one place over the last month. I’ve goggled and pain or itchy isn’t a sign of cancer but I just wondered if I should get it checked? I only had my last mammogram 10 months ago

  • Dear

Thank you for getting in touch with Macmillan Cancer Support and the Online Community. My name is Gillian and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry you are experiencing itching and discomfort to your breast. You are right to be paying attention to any new or unusual symptoms, especially given a breast cancer history.

Itching and pain after breast cancer treatment could be due to many reasons including late effects of surgery, radiotherapy or nerve damage from the treatments. It could also be unrelated to your breast cancer.

Even though your last mammogram was 10 months ago, new symptoms should be assessed. Any new, persistent, or worsening symptoms should be checked by your GP or Breast care nurse if you still have contact with them.

As your skin is sensitive at the moment it may be best to avoid any perfumed or scented products which may cause further irritation. Using gentle cleansers and moisturisers and protecting yourself from the sun may help calm the irritation.

I hope this information is helpful.  You can always call one of our nurses directly if you want to talk over your concerns or require any further support.

    Best wishes

    Gillian, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
