I was diagnosed with stage 3 advanced prostate cancer in December 2024,  & on the 1st July 2025 I had a Robotic assisted radical  prostatestory, with my catheter removed two days ago. Whilst waiting I had a fainting spell & fractured my back delaying the procedure for a month. Everything is going great post opp. but I am still in alot of pain with my back, regular pain relief paracetamol, ibuprofen, have very little effect & the consultant is willing to prescribe something a little stronger, but not really a route I want to go, because of issues with constipation etc.

I've been looking at portable TENS units, my sister gets on really well with hers, but on reading the instructions it recommends people with Cancer should seek medical advice.

Can you enlighten me on whether I should pursue this option, your advice would be gratefully appreciated.

  • Hello KBee,

Thanks for getting in touch with us during what sounds like a difficult time for you. I’m Linda, one of the nurses from our support line.

It’s understandable that you are looking for ways to ease your back pain and I appreciate that you are looking for alternative ways to do that.

It’s good to hear that your sister finds TENS helpful.

A TENS may be helpful for you, but they are not suitable for everyone. They are often used alongside pain medication.  Our information on Non-drug treatments includes more detail about them. You may also find our information on Pain useful.

I would encourage you to talk this through with your cancer team. They are best placed to advise you. They can refer you to a pain clinic and/or physiotherapist if appropriate.

    I hope this helps.

    Take care and best wishes,

Linda J.  (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
