Hi,

I am post hormone responsive breast cancer and have finished my treatment. On letrazole for 5 years but struggling with my weight. Would I be able to try weight loss injections?

  • Hi Veganch33se,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

My name is Carole and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see from your profile that you have joined one of our online groups. I hope you’ll find it a good source of support.

We’re sorry to read that you’re struggling with your weight.

Unfortunately, some cancer treatments and side effects can make you gain weight.

You’ve asked whether you could try GLP-1 injections. Glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists. These drugs work by making people feel fuller for longer and reducing their appetite.

Currently there is not a lot of evidence about how weight loss injections could affect anti-cancer treatments.

In his blog, our National Clinical Advisor, Dr Owen Carter, explains that more research is needed, and recommends that anyone who has had treatment for cancer, should talk to their cancer doctor, specialist nurse or pharmacist.

If you’d like information about nutrition, it might be worth getting in touch with one of the specialist dieticians at World Cancer Research Fund.

It might be helpful too, to read our information on weight gain after cancer treatment.

And you can download a copy of our booklet, Healthy Eating and Cancer, here. It’s for people living with or who have had cancer who want to know more about a healthy diet.

And if you’d like to talk to one of the nurses on the Support Line, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Sending my best wishes,

    Carole
