Hello. I’m after some advice. I had stage 3 cancer in 2023.  Had part of my bowel removed and underwent 3 months of chemo that ended in Feb 2024.  Since then, I have, thankfully, been fit and healthy with my scans etc coming back clear.  I go to the gym regularly and do weight training and cardio.  I have just started taking Creatine Monohydrate powder as some of the women in the gym said it would help.

Does Creatine Monohydrate have any negative effects with regards to cancer?  Just thought I would check in case I should not be taking it.  For context I am a 50 year old woman.  Thank you.

  • Hello Angelous,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

My name is Carole and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see from your profile that you have joined one of our online groups. I hope it will be a good source of support for you.

Being physically active after treatment is a positive step in recovery.

We’re pleased to read that you have been fit and healthy, and that your scans have been clear.

It’s only natural to want to make sure that it’s safe for you to take creatine monohydrate. Unfortunately, it’s difficult for us to answer, as there have not been enough studies done, and the limited results available, are unclear.

It might be worth talking to your oncology team about supplements. If you have a specialist nurse, you could ask them to speak to the consultant.

If you would like to talk to a dietician about nutrition, the World Cancer Research Fund’s helpline is available on Tuesdays between 12 and 2pm, and on Thursdays between 6 and 8pm.

I hope this is helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have further questions.

    Sending my best wishes,

    Carole
