Results of biopsy

Hi there I’m hoping that someone can give me advice on how long the wait time is for prostrate biopsy.

My husband had his 10 days ago at castle hill and was told that it’s usually between 2 and 10 days. The worry is affecting us both equally and not giving us chance to think about anything else. He has an identical twin who was diagnosed with cancer that doesn’t yet need treatment and got his biopsy with in 4 days.

My husband has the complications of being a haemophilic and copd. He’s terrible at taking any type of medication and talking about his health. I know he is in pain and is passing drops of blood from his bowels this obviously worries me as he will not ring to ask advice no matter how hard I try. The not knowing is pushing his blood pressure sky high and his dr has warned him that he is in danger and could have a stroke but I cannot force him to take his meds or take. Time off work.

is there anything else I can do?

  • Dear Nikk64

Thank you for getting in touch with us. I’m Alison, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists who works on the support line here at Macmillan.

It’s understandable that you and your husband are worried and struggling with the wait to get his results.

We know results can generally take up to around two weeks but sometimes it can be quicker or sometimes it can take longer than this depending on the test or local pressures.

It’s normal to experience some bleeding following a prostate biopsy, and it should improve after a couple of weeks. However if the bleeding worsens or he feels unwell in any way, please seek medical advice from his GP, NHS 111 or 999.

If you are concerned about your husband’s health or wellbeing, please don’t hesitate to reach out to his GP or urology team if he has one. It’s only natural to feel worried or anxious about what the results may be, but if it’s affecting his health, it’s important for him to see someone and ensure he is assessed and kept safe.

You might find it helpful to speak with one of our nurses about your concerns. This can be an uncertain time, and it can sometimes help to talk things through and talk about what to expect in the coming weeks. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us on the support line for advice or just someone to talk to.

    Take care,

    Alison,

  • Thanks for the reply I appreciate it.

My husband got a call this afternoon telling him they will discuss it with a face to face appointment on Friday morning. At least the wait won’t be much longer now. Thank you again. Nikk
