My 79 year old dad has distal gastric cancer and 80% of his stomach is removed. Staging is 3b. Can I give him Modified citrus pectin (MCP) ? Will that prevent metastasis? Since MCP has fiber, I wasn't sure. He will be starting chemo in a week.

  • Dear AnnaS123,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My Name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.

I’m sorry to read about your dad’s diagnosis of gastric cancer. I hope he is recovering well from the surgery.

You have asked about whether you can give him modified citrus pectin (MCP). It’s understandable that you want to give him something that you feel may help him. It’s important that you discuss this with his cancer team before starting it. Some supplements can affect cancer treatments.

On the Support Line we are separate to the NHS and do not have access to medical notes or NHS systems. His specialist team are best placed to discuss this further with you.

I hope that all goes well with his chemotherapy.

Supporting someone with cancer can be emotionally and physically exhausting. It’s important that you take time to look after yourself too. You are always welcome to call and speak to one of our nurses on the Support Line.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona P,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
