Possibly not the most important issue!  Is it safe to use a permanent hair colour whilst undergoing immunotherapy (Pembrolizumab)? Thank you.

  • Hi Caz375,

I’m Lorna one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the support line.

    Welcome to the online community.

It’s understandable to want to feel normal, and good about yourself, while having immunotherapy treatment. You can have your hair coloured while having immunotherapy. We would always advise you, however, to speak to your cancer doctor or nurse specialist to make sure your treatment is compatible with this. They have access to all your medical records and can offer you individual advice.

Pembrolizumab can cause hair loss or thinning in some people, but it’s not a common side effect. Cancer hair care gives you advice about looking after your hair while having treatment. And because your treatment can cause your skin to become inflamed, it would be advisable to have a patch test done before you have your hair dyed.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions, please get in touch by email, webchat or phone.
