Can you still go swimming (maybe just floating) if you have a chemo port in

  • Hi Oysters,

I’m Lorna one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the support line. Welcome to the online community.

Regular swimming can be an excellent form of exercise for individuals during and after treatment for cancer. We know with research that remaining active can help manage symptoms like pain and fatigue.

It’s very important to avoid getting an infection in the area where your port goes into your body.  There may be an infection risk and any dressing can be compromised if it’s submerged in water when using a public pool. Once your stitches and wound have healed it may be possible to go swimming. It’s important, however, to check with your consultant or clinical nurse specialist first if you are having chemotherapy. They will be able to advise you and tell you when your immune system has recovered sufficiently to go swimming. You might find this information helpful and just swim have some good advice too.

I do hope this information is helpful.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch. You can speak with the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or email us.
