Hi,

In 2010 I had a partial (right) nephrectomy .I am now 64 years old.

The Hospital Discharge report stated  the following:

" We feel that the tumour represents a type 2 Papillary adenocarcinoma of the kidney. The tumour cells are large and eosinophilic  and arranged in a papillary architecture. Nucleoli are prominent , more in keeping with a Fuhrman Grade 3 morphology. Tumour does not appear to invade perinephric adipose.

Diagnosis: Type 2 papillary adenocarcinoma f the kidney . Fuhrman Grade 3.

The tumour measured 3,6cm."

Tests taken since 2010:

The last CT Scan was in 2011 which was normal. Every year since 2010 I took an Abdominal Ultrasound which were always normal. My next US is scheduled for Tuesday 27th May 2025.

Annually I also took blood tests which included LFTs, cholesterol ( latest one was on the upper limit of the reference scale) , Creatinine (last reading was just on the upper limit of normal ), Microscopic Urinalysis (normal).

Family history:

My mother and elder brother both had episodes of kidney cancer and my other brother recently passed away after he was diagnosed with colon cancer . His 'colon cancer' was 'cured' bit then he had cancer in his liver and lungs.

My question bearing in mind all the above should I consider doing other tests? Is the Abdominal US result (which s clean) sufficient?

I was toying with the idea of doing a colonoscopy and the clinic I usually go to is recommending I do a CT colonography as it will not only check the colon (in view of the family history) built also the surround tissues, muscles and organs.

I have not still decided yet.

Any advice would be welcomed.

PS apologies if this is not the right forum to post my question.

 Thank you.

Regards and good day,

M

  • Hello MarkCam,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. I’m Linda, one of the nurses from our support line. I hope you are finding the kidney cancer forum supportive.

It’s encouraging to read that your scans have been normal.

Follow up for kidney cancer normally depends on the treatment you have had and the risk of the cancer coming back.

I appreciate that worrying about cancer coming back can be very hard to cope with and that you have experience of kidney cancer and colon cancer in the family.

It’s worth considering having the CT colonography as recommend but unfortunately, it’s a personal decision about whether to have other tests carried out, like having a colonoscopy. It may help to think about the pros and cons of having these tests.

Colonoscopy is often offered as part of screening if there has been a family history of colon cancer.

I would encourage you to talk over your concerns with the team.

    I hope this helps.

    Take care and best wishes,

Linda J.  (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
