Target brain radio therapy

  • Hi Ppiebald

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Here at Macmillan, we can give general advice and support. We are an independent charity and don’t have access to medical records. We cannot give personalised information,

Targeted brain radiotherapy can cause temporary hair loss in the area being treated, as the radiation beams affects the hair follicles. In many cases the hair will grow back roughly about 3-6 months after your treatment is completed, but the texture and the colour might be slightly different.

However, for some people the hair loss may be permanent especially if you’re receiving high doses of radiotherapy.

Both Macmillan and Cancer hair care has some good information on safe ways to dye your hair as well as managing new hair growth. They also recommend a sensitivity tests and to ensure your scalp and hair are in a good condition first.

I hope you found this information helpful.

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch. You can talk to one of our nurses on the support line. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.
