I have been diagnosed with BCC 1 week ago, it is on my face and just looked like a scar healing. I've been referred to plastics by my GP. How long is the wait time on the NHS and us Mohs Surgery the best way yo remove it..

I'm worried as I've had it for 18 months.

Please advise

  • Hi Cockerpoo67,

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Sarah and I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists.

It’s understandable to feel worried while you are waiting to be seen at the hospital. Although this link is about waiting for medical tests, I hope you find it useful as it gives tips to try and ease worry.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. They are usually slow growing and rarely spread to other areas of the body.

Treatments can vary depending on the situation and area of skin affected, so it’s difficult for us to comment whether Mohs micrographic surgery is best for you. Only your hospital consultant can advise on this. British Association of dermatologists (BAD) has information that you might find helpful to look at.

Regarding timescales for seeing a dermatologist it varies from hospital to hospital. Getting in touch with your GP receptionist might be able to let you know how long referrals are taking at the moment.

Cancer Research UK has general information about referral to a skin cancer specialist that you might find useful to read.

I really hope this information was helpful.  Please know, you can always give us a call to talk things through further.

    Take care and best wishes,

    Sarah (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
