Lung module.

Hi,

I had a respiratory app on Monday, I have a lung module that has grown, usually a biopsy would be done but because I have a large blood vessel running through it, it’s too dangerous to do one, the consultant can’t say if it’s cancer or not, I have to have a repeat scan in 4 months to see if it’s grown and if it has then it’ll go from there, 4 months just seems a long time if not knowing.

Thanks

  • Hi Trenty

Welcome to our Online Community.  My name is Tricia and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists  on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear you are facing an uncertainty regarding a lung nodule that has been found. It is important to remember that lung nodules can be common and caused by benign (non-cancer) causes such as infection or scarring. In some cases, they can be caused by cancer.

It is understandable that the waiting can feel long in between scans when you don’t know if this is a cancer or not. However, they need to monitor for any changes in size of these lung nodules to make a diagnosis if they are unable to perform biopsies on you.

Your case is likely to have been discussed in a Lung Multidisciplinary team (MDT) where a group of experts in lung cancer/disease look at the scans and decide on the timing of the next scan by looking at you as an individual.

While awaiting the next scan, if you find you develop any changes to your health such as breathlessness, a cough that won’t go away, weight loss, pain or other concerns, you should contact the respiratory team to let them know. You would contact  NHS 111 for any new or worsening symptoms out of hours.

I hope you have some family or friends for support and that you can keep yourself busy in between scans.  It may be possible to try to  ease worry when waiting for medical test results

Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch at any time.

    Sending best wishes,
