Ive been having bloating and irregular bleeding so was sent on a 2 week pathway. I had an ultrasound scan and internal scan yesterday, I have just had a text to say that I will be receiving a call from Gynae-Oncology advanced nurse, so I am presuming something is wrong, or is this standard?

  • Good morning Murph,

Thank you for getting in touch and welcome to our online community, I hope you find it supportive. I’m Helen, one of the cancer information nurses here on the Macmillan support line.

I’m sorry to read you have been experiencing symptoms of bloating and irregular bleeding and you’ve been referred on an urgent suspected cancer pathway. This was known as the 2 week wait pathway. It’s understandable you may be worried that something is wrong from the text you received yesterday.

It is normal to worry when you are urgently referred and you’re waiting for test results. However, more than 9 out of 10 people (more than 90% of people) who have an urgent suspected cancer referral will not be diagnosed with cancer.

As we haven’t got access to your medical records on the Macmillan support line, we’re unable to see the details of this call with the nurse. As you’ve been referred through this pathway, it is likely the nurse will be calling you to discuss the results of your scans. The specialist nurses are the best people to ask what the results mean for you and whether you may need any further tests and see a gynaecology consultant.

While you’re in this waiting period and you experience any new, worsening or changing symptoms, please do get back in touch with your GP or NHS 111.

I really do hope that it’s a positive outcome for you. We understand that the waiting time and uncertainty is challenging. If you need a listening ear at the end of the line during this time you’re very welcome to talk things through with us if you have any questions and share any worries you have.

I hope this information is helpful but if you have any more questions please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Best wishes,

    Helen, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
