Hello

i had a catheter inserted 10 days ago and still am having pain in my penis necessitating taking paracetamols. They do relieve the pain for a short time. Has anyone any advice how to stop the tube moving and irritating the penis head insertion point?

thank you

  • Dear Sheffstu,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.

I’m sorry to read that you are having issues with your catheter.

I wonder if you have spoken to your GP or specialist nurse about the pain that you are experiencing. There are different causes of penile discomfort and it’s important that you report this, and it is assessed. There is medication that may help which can be prescribed once the cause has been identified.

It’s important to make sure that the catheter tubing isn’t attached too tightly to your leg. There should be some slack. Using a G-strap (a strap around your leg) or a StatLock (a device to attach the catheter to your leg) can help to limit the catheter movement, which may help.

On the Support Line we are separate to the NHS and do not have access to medical notes or NHS systems. Your GP or specialist nurse are best placed to assess you. They would want to know that you are still having pain.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona P,
