Colon cancer potentially spread to Abdomen

Hi,

I had my first annual scan a few weeks ago. I received news yesterday that they had seen 'something' in my abdomen and I've been referred back to MDT. A return of the cancer is not confirmed until MDT on the 13th of May. I don't want to use Dr. Google obviously and this might be a something and nothing as my consultant hasn't seen the scan yet, the CT team recommended the return to MDT.  What kind of treatments would I expect if this is cancer?  Would there potentially be more surgeries? More chemo? Radiotherapy? I'm just trying to prepare myself with actual facts for the potential roller coaster ahead.

Thanks,

Cerys

  • Hi Cerys

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community.

I can see you have joined the bowel and rectal cancer forum. I hope your finding it helpful sharing your experience with others.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to read that your first annual follow up scan identified something in your abdomen, and you have been referred back to the MDT for your case to be discussed. I can imagine how worried you are right now, and I can understand your concerns.

Here at Macmillan, we can give general advice and support. We are an independent charity and don’t have access to medical records. We cannot give personalised information,

It’s difficult to say at this stage what may be going on in your abdominal cavity and whether this is a recurrence. Depending on the cause will depend on the treatment options offered. Your team will discuss your options with you once they have a confirmed diagnosis.

I know this is a challenging time trying to prepare yourself for a potential roller coaster ride ahead. It’s normal to feel this way and to question what the future may hold. It’s important to avoid google as that might not be helpful and focus on staying fit and well.

It’s also important that you don’t feel alone. Here at Macmillan, we offer a range of support and services you can access. You may find this link helpful to look at.

There is further information and support available through. Bowel Cancer UK.

You can also give us a call and talk to one of our nurses on the support line. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.

I hope this information has been helpful, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Best wishes
