  • Hi MadHouse25,

Thank you for getting in touch with us and welcome to our online community.  My name is Adrienne and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists at Macmillan

I’m sorry to hear about the symptoms your partner has been experiencing and completely understandable that you both just want to know what’s going on and whether or not this could be cancer.  Unfortunately, no one can give you an idea of what might be wrong, other than the consultant in charge of his care.  Even then, they need to do these tests and investigations to find out exactly what is going on.

You mentioned the speed in which the appointments are coming through and this along with worsening symptoms, is making you worried.  When cancer is suspected, as one of the potential things that could be wrong, there is always an urgency to get tests done, to either diagnose quickly or rule it out.  This is called the Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) in England.  Scotland, Ireland and Wales have their own pathways but they are similar.  You can read more about that here.  These pathways are in place so that cancer can be ruled out or diagnosed within a certain time.  So the time from a referral being received by the hospital to finding out whether or not there is cancer present should be no more than 28 days.  Therefore all scans, biopsies etc should be done quickly within this time.

I really do understand how difficult this waiting period is and can feel like things are going fast but time is standing still at the same time.  You both just want answers.  But until these investigations are done, no-one can say exactly what is going on.  It’s not unusual to feel anxious and like you both have no control over what is going to happen.  Some people find it helps to continue with their daily activities whilst others feel they can’t concentrate on anything else.  There is no right or wrong way to deal with these feelings.  As your partner has bipolar disorder, it may be helpful for him to reach out to his mental health team (if he has one) to discuss how they can give some extra support during this time.  He can also talk to his GP about support going forward.

It's important that you look after yourself too MadHouse25.  Please know that you can give us a call on the support line to talk things through.  It’s completely confidential and although we don’t have access to NHS records, we can talk to you in general terms about what is going on.  It also gives you the opportunity

I know this isn’t what you’d hoped for but I hope it helped, even just a little.

    Take care and best wishes,

    Adrienne
